Welcome to the European Interdisciplinary Council on Ageing (EICA) website

Dear EICA members and visitors of the website,

This website is designed to provide information about our mission and mandate to all stakeholders, from professional societies in healthcare to patients associations and general population, from decision-makers, economists, lawyers, sociologists to representatives of insurance companies and pharma and high technology industries. It is an open platform that will try to create initiatives, present actions and spread information related to the research, education and care of older persons in Europe.

In 2019, the population of Europe was estimated to be about 727 million, and older persons (aged 65 or over) represented about 14.7%. While the projected number of the total population will stay stable until 2050, the percentage of people older than 65 years will grow from 14.7% of that year to 27.9% in 2050.

During the same period of the time, in Europe, the lack of health care professionals, which is currently estimated at around 1 million, will raise to 4.1 million (WHO global strategy on human resources for health (HRH): Workforce 2030 – Geneva 2016). The lack of trained workforce will particularly affect the care of the old population. For this reason, it is especially important for EICA to focus mainly on the interdisciplinary training activities in geriatric medicine and gerontology.

We invite you to explore our website and to learn more about how we are collaborating with the most important scientific societies, to offer education activities and training on a wide range of topics important to older people and their families.

The Executive Board is always eager to hear from visitors interested in the activities of EICA. Please feel free to contact any of us with your queries and interests in ways to promote the health and well-being of older citizens of Europe. We thank you for your interest.
